# Push Notifications in Comm.care
Comm.care sends **instant phone alerts** (push notifications) straight to your phone so you know when something needs your attention — without having to open the app. This guide covers what triggers a notification, how to make sure they're turned on, and what to do if they stop working.
## What triggers a push notification?
You'll receive a push notification when:
- **Someone @mentions you in a comment** — on any record you have access to (an appointment, a Circle of Care, an incident report, a risk, or a feedback document). The notification shows who mentioned you and a preview of their comment.
- **A circle document is flagged** — when a document in one of your Circles is flagged (red or yellow), all Circle members and organisation managers receive a notification with the flag type and document title.

> _More notification types are coming soon — including vacant shift alerts that let support workers pick up available shifts in real time._
## How to enable push notifications
### Accept the prompt on first login
The first time you open the Comm.care app after installing it, your phone will ask whether to allow notifications. **Tap Allow** — this is the easiest way to turn them on.

**On Android:**

### If you missed the prompt
If you dismissed the prompt or want to double-check that notifications are on:
**On iOS (iPhone / iPad):**
1. Open **Settings** on your device.
2. Scroll down and tap **Notifications**.
3. Find and tap **Comm.care**.
4. Make sure **Allow Notifications** is turned on.

## How to @mention someone
You can @mention a colleague on any record that has a Comments section — appointments, Circle of Care activity, incidents, risks, and feedback documents.
1. Open the record.
2. Scroll to the **Comments** section on the right side.
3. In the comment box, type **@** followed by the person's name.
4. A dropdown will appear — select the person you want to mention.
5. Finish your comment and click enter.

The mentioned person receives an instant push notification on their phone. Tapping the notification opens the record directly in the app.

## Tapping a notification
When you tap a push notification, Comm.care opens directly to the relevant record — the appointment, Circle, or document where the comment or flag was posted. You don't need to search for it.

## Troubleshooting
### I'm not receiving notifications
1. **Check your device settings** — follow the steps above in [If you missed the prompt](#if-you-missed-the-prompt) to make sure notifications are allowed.
2. **Check that the app is up to date** — push notifications require the latest version of the Comm.care app. Update from the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/comm-care-by-pnyx/id6738582991) or [Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pnyx.commcare).
3. **Check your internet connection** — notifications need an active internet connection to arrive.
4. **Try signing out and back in** — this refreshes your device's notification registration with the server.
### I get notifications on one device but not the other
Each device registers separately. Make sure notifications are enabled in the device settings on **each** phone or tablet you use.
### I signed out — will I still get notifications?
No. When you sign out of Comm.care, your device is unregistered and you stop receiving notifications. Sign back in and notifications resume automatically (as long as permissions are still allowed on the device).
### I'm still having trouble
